Nursing bra. Maternity bra. Pregnancy bra. They're often used interchangeably, but they're not quite the same thing — and knowing the difference can save you money, frustration, and a lot of uncomfortable mornings.
Here's exactly what each one does, when you need it, and whether you actually need both.
What is a maternity bra?

A maternity bra is designed to support a changing body during pregnancy. The key features are comfort, adjustability, and the ability to accommodate growth. Maternity bras typically have wider bands, deeper cups, multiple hook-and-eye positions, and softer fabrics with more stretch than everyday bras.
They don't always have nursing clips — some do, some don't. A maternity bra without nursing clips is designed purely for pregnancy comfort. One with nursing clips can be worn through pregnancy and then into the feeding stage.
What is a nursing bra?
A nursing bra is specifically designed for breastfeeding. The defining feature is nursing access — usually a clip on each strap that allows the cup to drop away for feeding without removing the bra. Good nursing bras also offer support that accommodates fluctuating breast size, since breast volume changes significantly between feeds.
Many nursing bras are also suitable to wear during pregnancy — particularly from the second trimester onwards, when growth has slowed enough to make sizing more predictable.
Do I need both?
Not necessarily. Many mamas find that buying a good nursing bra from around 36 weeks of pregnancy covers both stages — it's comfortable enough for the third trimester and fully functional for feeding once baby arrives.
If your breasts change significantly and quickly in the first and second trimesters, you may want a dedicated maternity bra for that period before transitioning to nursing bras later. This is particularly common for mamas who experience significant growth early in pregnancy.
Flexiwire vs wirefree — what's right for a nursing bra?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is: it depends on your stage and preference.
Wirefree nursing bras
The most popular choice for the early postpartum period. Without any wire structure, they're gentle on sensitive breast tissue and milk ducts, and they flex easily with a changing shape. Hotmilk's seamless wirefree styles like My Necessity are designed to expand up to four cup sizes, making them ideal for the unpredictable early weeks.
Flexiwire nursing bras

Hotmilk's patented flexible wire technology — a soft wire that sits on the ribcage rather than on breast tissue, giving more structure and uplift than a wirefree style without the risks associated with traditional underwire. These are often preferred once feeding is established and breast size has settled.
Traditional underwire
Generally best avoided during active breastfeeding, particularly in the early months. Pressure on milk ducts increases the risk of blocked ducts and mastitis.
