A Quick Guide to Expressing Colostrum

Colostrum, often called "liquid gold," is the first milk your body produces during pregnancy and the early postpartum days. Packed with essential nutrients, antibodies, and growth factors, colostrum provides newborns with a strong immune foundation.

Many expectant mothers choose to express and store colostrum before birth to ensure their baby receives these vital benefits, especially in cases of anticipated feeding challenges or medical concerns. We have highlighted benefits and how to below but The Australian Breastfeeding Association have a more detailed article here

Benefits of Expressing Colostrum

  • Boosts Immunity – Rich in antibodies, colostrum helps protect newborns from infections and supports gut health.

  • Ideal for Early Feeding – If a baby has difficulty latching immediately after birth, expressed colostrum ensures they receive nourishment.

  • Supports Blood Sugar Levels – Particularly helpful for babies at risk of low blood sugar, such as those born to diabetic mothers.

  • Aids in Digestion – Colostrum has a mild laxative effect, helping newborns pass their first stool (meconium) and reducing jaundice risk.

When to Start Expressing

Most healthcare providers recommend starting colostrum harvesting around 36-37 weeks of pregnancy, unless advised otherwise. Always check with your midwife or doctor before beginning, especially if you have a history of preterm labor. Both the Milk Collective and Made To Milk have great Colostrum Expressing Kit

How to Express Colostrum: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Wash Your Hands – Ensure clean hands to prevent contamination.

  2. Warm Your Breasts – Use a warm compress or take a warm shower to encourage milk flow.

  3. Massage Gently – Stroke your breast in a circular motion towards the nipple to stimulate milk production.

  4. Use the Right Technique – Place your thumb and fingers about an inch behind your nipple, gently compress, release, and repeat rhythmically.

  5. Collect the Colostrum – Expressed colostrum is thick and comes out in drops. Use a sterile syringe or small container to collect it.

  6. Store Safely – Label and refrigerate or freeze colostrum in sterile containers. It can be stored in the fridge for up to 48 hours or frozen for up to six months.

What to Expect When Expressing Colostrum

  • Small Amounts – Colostrum is produced in small but highly concentrated quantities, typically a few milliliters per session.

  • Thick Consistency – It may appear yellowish and sticky, which is completely normal.

  • Mild Uterine Contractions– Some women experience Braxton Hicks contractions due to nipple stimulation; if they become intense, stop and consult your doctor.

Advice on Expressing Colostrum

Expressing colostrum is a great way to prepare for breastfeeding, ensuring your baby gets an early immunity and nutritional boost. If you're considering colostrum harvesting, consult your healthcare provider for personalised advice and make sure you have sterile syringes or collection containers ready.
