The First Few Weeks, Honestly

The First Few Weeks, Honestly

Nobody hands you a manual for the first few weeks of breastfeeding. You get advice, plenty of it, but very little of it tells you what it actually feels like at 3am when your milk has just come in and you don't recognise your own body.

What Nobody Tells You About Week One

You will leak. Not a little, sometimes through your clothes, sometimes in the middle of a conversation with someone who has no idea. You will feed for what feels like the entire night, put your baby down, and they will want to feed again in twenty minutes. This is called cluster feeding, and it is normal, even though nothing about being touched constantly and sleeping in fragments feels normal at the time.

Your chest will be fuller, heavier, and changing by the day. This is not a flaw to fix - it's your body doing exactly what it's meant to do, just faster and bigger than anything that fit you before.

Your Body Right Now

Somewhere between the hospital bag and the first appointment, most of us reach for whatever bra is nearby and hope it holds. The problem is that nothing about week one is static. Your size can shift within the same day, let alone the same week, and a bra that fit yesterday can dig in today.

This is the part nobody prepares you for: it isn't about finding one bra that's comfortable. It's about finding one that can keep up while your body is still working it out.

What She Wore Through It

Soft against skin that's more sensitive than usual, with no stiff seams or underwire digging in

Flexible enough to move with a body that's changing day to day, not just week to week

Nursing clips built for one-handed use, because the other hand is always full

It Gets Easier, Just Not in a Straight Line

Nobody's first few weeks look like the ones you see online, and yours doesn't need to either. Some days will feel like progress. Some days will feel like week one all over again. Both are normal, and neither one means you're doing it wrong.

If you're in it right now, at 3am, not recognising your own reflection - you're not alone in it, even if it feels that way tonight.
